Effective Home Remedies To Treat Sunburn Fast

Exposure to sun gives vitamin D, but long term exposure results in sun tan. Overexposure to harmful ultraviolet radiation (both UVA and UVB) produce aggressive effects to skin called sunburn. There is a myth that cloudy climate is safe for skin as UV rays cannot pass through clouds. In reality, irrespective of sunny or cloudy climate, UV radiation effects and produces harsh effects on skin.

Sunburn - The term is self explanatory. Initial signs include irritation, redness, pain, inflammation. In some cases ultraviolet rays contribute for prematurely aging of skin and skin cancers.

Symptoms of Sunburn:

When exposed to sun radiations, harmful ultraviolet rays produce superficial harm to skin damaging elastin. Elastin is a fibre that gives elastic nature to skin. When these fibers break down, the skin loses its elasticity and begins to sag.

On overexposure, UV rays penetrate deep into skin and alter skin DNA. The condition may become worse when these rays tend to damage DNA resulting in threatening conditions like melanoma (skin cancer).

Initial symptoms:

Initial symptoms include uneven pigmentation, slight redness to the skin. Further it may produce blisters and cold sores.  Allergic reactions like rashes, skin inflammation, itching, and peeling of skin  are found on affected areas. Other symptoms may include dehydration, nausea (vomiting feeing), hyperthermia (fever), shivering, heavy breathing loss of consciousness etc

 Long term effects:

Sunburn may produce permanent and ill effects like Heatstroke, premature wrinkling, age spots, skin cancer, Vision problems, and weakens immune system.

How to Treat Sunburn?

  • The best way to prevent sunburn is to avoid or at least minimize long exposure to sun. Cover your body with full sleeve shirts and full length pants, wear hat.
  • Do not go out in the afternoons. Keep an eye on the clock. Avoid exposing yourself to sun between 10 am to 4 pm.
  • Apply sun screen lotions regularly for every 3 hours.
  • Massage your skin with soothing lotions to relive skin from pain and inflammation.
  • Drink lot of water and fluids. Hydrate your body to remove excess heat.
  • Frequently damp your body with wet cloth.
  • Avoid medications which increase sensitivity to the sun.
  • To treat pain, use pain relievers like Aspirin.
  • Avoid smoking and consuming excess of caffeine, alcohol
  • Use mild soaps to clean blisters, wounds. Chemicals in soap may dry the skin, increase irritation making the condition even worse.

Home Remedies For Sunburn:

Aloe vera: 

Aloe vera is the age old remedy to relieve sunburn pain.
Required Ingredients: Aloe vera gel, water
How to use: Prepare aloe vera gel from fresh aloe vera plant or else buy it from a health food store. Add 1 proportion of water to 3 proportions of aloe vera gel. Mix thoroughly and freeze it. Take chilled aloe vera gel and rub on the skin.

Baking soda:

Baking soda is easily available household item in kitchen. It is a best remedy to treat itchy areas on sunburned skin.
Required Ingredients: Baking soda, water
How to use: Based on the area of sunburned skin, Take required amount of Baking soda. Blend with cool water to make it a fine paste. Apply to the affected areas and wash off after 30 minutes.

Potato paste:  

Potato helps to ease the pain and heals the skin faster.
Required Ingredients: Potato, cotton balls
How to use: depending on the sunburned area, take around 1 or 2 Potatoes and grate them. Add water to make it a paste. Soak cotton balls into fine paste and apply all over the sunburn skin.

Cucumber:

Cucumber possesses excellent antioxidant and analgesic properties. It provides cooling effect to skin, relieving pain and discomfort on sunburn areas.
Required Ingredients: fresh cucumber
How to use: Take fresh slices of cucumber and mash into a thick paste. Apply to affected areas and leave it for about 1 hour. For better results you can even add aloe vera gel or vitamin E oil to this.

Cornstarch: 

Cornstarch reduces your pain and skin redness from sunburn.
Required Ingredients: Cornstarch, cool water
How to use: In a bowl add right amounts of Cornstarch and cool water. Stir thoroughly until we get a thick paste. Apply to the itchy and peeled off skin regularly to give better results.

Cool milk: 

This is the best cost effective sunburn remedy. Milk rich in proteins, restores skin texture and heals sunburn areas effectively.
Required Ingredients: milk, cloth
How to use: Soak a piece of cloth in cool milk. Gently apply it to the burned areas. Rinse off completely after  20 minutes.

Vitamin E:

Generation of free oxygen radicals results in oxidative stress worsening sunburn effects on skin. Vitamin E is a naturally occurring antioxidant that protects skin from the harmful effects of oxidative stress. Apply Vitamin E oil to moisturize the skin. It reduces the intensity of sunburn.  Also Vitamin protects elastic fibers found in the extracellular matrix of the skin retaining skin texture to normal.

Yogurt:

Yogurt is a rich source of probiotics, proteins, vitamins and enzymes. It helps to soothe your skin. Also plays a vital role in balancing pH of skin thus restoring skin’s defense mechanism.
Required Ingredients: plain yogurt
How to use: Apply plain yogurt to all sunburned areas. Leave it for 10 minutes. Wash off in a cool shower. You can add turmeric powder to it.

Take an Oatmeal Bath: 

This remedy especially works for itchy sunburned skin. Oatmeal is rich in polysaccharides that will coat your skin healing mild sunburn symptoms. It also contains fats which hydrate skin giving cooling effect.
Required Ingredients: uncooked oatmeal, water, cotton balls
How to use: Prepare oatmeal powder and add required amount of water to make it a fine paste. Gently apply this paste with cotton balls on to the sunburn affected areas.  Re-apply for every 2 to 4 hours.

Coconut Oil:

Coconut oil is a good choice to treat sunburn
All you have to do is gently rub some coconut oil to the sunburned affected areas. Make this as your routine to see fantastic results. Coconut oil effectively heal dry and peel skin. It soothes your skin giving a cool and calm feeling.

Tea:

Tea contains tannins that reduce skin inflammation and pain.
Required Ingredients: tea powder, mint, boiling water
How to use: Make a strong tea. Soak small towel or cloth into tea and then apply to the sunburn area. You can add fresh mint juice to have longer cooling effects to skin.
